The Hydrogeological map at 1:25,000 scale (Geowork V of the geological map of Catalonia), is a geothematic map applied to the hydrogeology field and is conceived as a tool for the strategic management of groundwater resources. Knowledge of the water cycle dynamics and the spatial and temporal characterization of the water resource are essential for its correct evaluation and management. The hydrogeological maps differ from the other geothematic maps applied by the fact of representing some parameters that change with time as the water table position or the water chemical conditions. For this reason, the data included in these maps always refers to a specific period of time.

The Hydrogeological Map, which is carried out in collaboration with the Catalan Water Agency, reflects quantitative and qualitative aspects of groundwater.

Hydrogeological mapping consists basically on acquire geological and hydrogeological data such as hydraulic characteristics of rocks, data on hydrodynamics and hydrochemistry of groundwater and the location of anthropogenic elements like wells, water horizontal drainages and springs.

The map shows the main hydrogeological characteristics of the subsoil in terms of permeability and types of porosity and the aquifer limits at scale 1:25,000. Local piezometric data and/or equipotential lines are generated and published, the main directions of the groundwater flow and the existence of significant pumping cones. It is also represented the hydrochemical facies of the groundwater (Stiff diagrams) and in coastal areas, the electric conductivity and the relationship between the content of chlorides and sulfates of groundwater.

Depending on the extension and type of aquifers present on each map, hydrogeological sections are presented to better understand the geometry and relationship between the different aquifers, the location and depths of wells, and the position of the piezometric level.

The hydrogeological map includes an intrinsic vulnerability map of aquifers at 1:100,000 scale. It evaluates from a qualitative and regional perspective, the probability that a certain pollutant reaches the saturated zone of the subsoil.
